In high school you probably read that the Supreme Court granted easements on private lands to railroads over a century ago with the stipulation that if those railroads would ever be abandoned the property reverts back to the original landowner. Naturally politicians decided to give away something that wasn’t theirs to begin with and started approving the transfer of abandoned railroads not to the original property owners, but to Rails to Trails programs all across the country. Today the rule of law on private property was finally re-established.
